What about Dodo for no 8?
Question Author
Sparrow could fit for either 3 or 6 but nor sure why in both cases. Think 6 is an anagram of a famous doc and house.

Still need

3, 5, 6, 8!
Could 3 be diver (sky divers)
IMO Sparrow is a good fit for 6. Dr Sparrow was the "hero" of the film "Doctor in the House" based on Richard Gordon's book of the same name.
Question Author
Thanks so far - we think 3 has to be redarrow for the aerobatic team but what about the "no, only part" bit!
8 Dead as a Dodo IE Late
Worldwide there are several aerobatic teams featuring birds (Hawks, Falcons, Swifts) - if limited to UK military you have the Red Arrows or the Blue Eagles (helicopters).

Question Author
We've already got Hawk and Swift for other ones - could be one of the others tho!
I had been thinking diver as - 'no' because you associate it with sea rather than the air and then it is also part of skydivers which are an aerobatic team. Not very convincing I know.

Is 5 def grip and not gripe (if so it could be snipe)?
Question Author
No, it's definitely grip!
Question Author
Okay, going with Sparrow for 6, so just need 3, 5 and 8
