breast lump biopsy

I have found a lump and am going for a biopsy. In my stressed state I didn't ask what they actually do. Someone told me that they just put a needle in and draw some stuff out and test it. Is that right. Will it be painful, how long does it take. and how long before I get the results. Any info woukd be appreciated no matter how bad so I can prepare my self. Thanks

it is very uncomfortable, as a doctor will find the lump and insert a needle wide enough to take a sample of tissue from it (not that big - honestly!). depends where the lump is, how painful it is and your own pain tolerance levels. i just took a deep breath and looked away as it was done - and i am a chicken where needles are concerned. it wasn't that bad and the results are usually pretty fast, which put your mind at rest. mine turned out to be a case of fairly lumpy boobs generally and no problems. i do hope that yours turn out ok too - as the majority of these things do. x

I've had a biopsy on my breast. You are injected and 'stuff' is removed for tesing. Its not that painful and I had a nurse supporting me during the injection. I received the results a short time later.

I had a needle biopsy, mammogram, and sonogram a few years ago.........all done and dusted with all results in just over 2 hours........uncomfortable but not painful, the worst part to me was the mammogram.......good luck, and stay positive.

Agree with all the above a needle biopsy is uncomfortable but quick and a great way for them to check your situation correctly.

Thank you for your comments, you don't know how re-assuring you have been. I have been in a bit of a daze for the last 10 days but I just want it all over now. Thank you once again.

I find it depends on who does it.

I've had two done on different lumps. The first by a breast surgeon themselves which was quite rough and very uncomfortable, though probably more because I didn't know what I was expecting.

The second was done by the radiographer while she was doing my scan. She was lovely, even remembered me from having my other one even though it was over a year since that one.

She did it a lot smoother and it was nowhere near as uncomfortable though she did have the benefit of being able to see where she was going on the scan.

It was a normal ultrasound I think, apparantly they tend to do that for younger girls as their breasts are denser or something like that.

I guess it might make a difference whereabouts it is, how easy to get to and such. I have quite large boobs so I guess they had a lot farther to go in to get to mine.

Again the results took different times. The first time it was about a week, the second time they said to stick around and go back in a few hours and I got the results then and there.

Everyone was fantastic both times, the nurses, breast surgeons, radiographer, it made a big difference at some very worrying times.

Both were fine, as is the usual case, they were both harmless fibrous adenomas.

Hello, are you having a mammogram,scan and biopsy?
when i had a needle biopsy it was not painful .
The worst bit is waiting for your results,all my results were back in about seven days.

I've not had a biopsy but have had a breast lump removed. If you feel really nervous, perhaps you could have some light sedation mum.
