I have a three years or so old version of Vista.

When I look at photos in My Pictures it automatically goes into slideshow mode after a while, if I've been looking at several photos in a row. I can get back to let-me-click-one-at-a-time mode by pressing Escape, but is there a setting somewhere I can do to prevent it from going into slideshow mode by its own decision?

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question directly but I'm amazed that anyone is actually using the Windows built-in image viewer. It's pathetic even when it's working properly! Switch to using Irfanview (which is vastly superior) and you can completely forget about your current problem. (It's totally free!):
