Probably not for the sedate British taste buds, but here in the U.S. this is the staple for true Southern Style Barbeque sauce:
1 cup ketchup
1 cup black strap molasses (unfiltered)
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon cayenne
Preparation:
Heat oil in a saucepan. Add garlic and sauté until brown. Add remaining ingredients and reduce heat. Simmer for 15 minutes until thickened. More or less pepper and/or chili powder to taste... should be tangy but not overtly spicy hot...

Treacle - http://www.ochef.com/316.htm
After Googling "Treacle" (pardon the ignorance) I would say it's not the same. I see (on another site) that it's available and Tesco's (called Meridian Organic) , Holland and Barrett and a place called Goodness direct on line.... Try it, you might like it. It's a great ingredient in various type of cookies (Ooops... biscuits), especially, Old Fashioned Molasses Cookies (seen here: http://www.bettycrock...&WT.srch=1&esrc=11151 ) Sorry for the long URL...
