polo overheating

Replaced thermostat but engine overheats still (water). If I remove thermostat it works normally althoug, as expected, the heating is not fully functional. Bottom rad pipe cool without thermostat but warm without it.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

That last sentence should have read: bottom rad pipe cold when thermostat in and warm when it is removed.
If this is a 6n polo chances are the plastic water pump impellor is loose on the shaft. not unusual with these pumps, also occurs on golfs

What is 6n Polo? The model is a Polo 1.4 lassic, 4 door saloon - year 1997.

If the impellor is loose does this mean the pump itself should be replaced?
yes thats a 6n model. yes only solution is new pump problem usually occurs at high mileages

Thanks to rdv for replies and help - new pump looks the bet.
Vw have modified the thermostat and cover cost £30 with seal the cure
