Games console - XBox, Gamecube, PS??

I want to buy a games console, but have never owned one before.  I like racing games, shooting games, simulators, and all multiplayer games.

Could anyone recommend one of the consoles?  Are they all equally good, or are some better than others (ie. better graphics, games etc.)

If your not in a hurry then I would recommend waiting until Nov when the new xbox360 is due. Failing that, I would imagine the others will drop in proce to compete against the newer console which will have vastly improved graphics.

Otherwise, the playstation 2 is very popular but is less powerfull graphicaly then the original xbox. Maybe check out the sort of games you would like to play and buy accordingly.

I've not mentioned the gamecube as I am assuming you are over 10 years old !

I'd pick the cheapest out of the Xbox or PS2!!.

Both have great games and multiplayer games. Both have great graphics (Xbox is better), both have almost identical games to play.

But as khana mentioned the new Xbox 360 AND the PS3 are out soon(ish). But will cost the earth when relased!!!

Oh and only buy the gamecube if you like monkeys or elves!

We went to buy a PS2 about 18 months ago and a very nice man in Game (bit geeky but bless he was sweet) was all set to sell us it until I asked "What would you buy" and he said the Xbox every time for the graphics and on-line potential.  So we bought the XBox.  I have played the PS2 and have to admit the Xbox does have better graphics.

However, I do know that Sony have the monopoly of some software companies so there are some games you cant get on Xbox but these are getting fewer and fewer and personally I have never been disappointed.

Horses for courses.  If you dont like Bill Gates then he owns Xbox!

my boyfriend says playstation (hes at uni studying computer game software engineering I'll have you know!) he said it has better games. Me being a female and knowing absolutely nothing about computer game things (except how to whoop ass on dead or alive 3) I think xbox

Thanks to all of you for your help.  I like the idea of waiting for the 360, but I think the money's unlikely!!

I do like elves, but not too keen on monkeys, so think I'm going to go for the Xbox.
