Why can't BP fire an unarmed torpedo into the oil pipe to plug it ?
The robots work at that depth so why not a torpedo maybe filled with concrete. Even if it didn't work a 100% any small leaks left could be more easily dealt with, and it could then be capped.

Sounds simple doesn't it!?
I think you have to consider the depths under the ocean that these measures have to work. 21" pipe fractured at 1500 M depth.
Call BP.
They have already considered blowing it up but backed out because of the fear of the possible consequences. Whether its true or not I've heard the fractured pipe is only 6" diameter.

Currently all attempts to stop the flow have been above the ground surface. Yet to extract the oil then on top of the 1 mile depth of water it has to travel a further 2 miles down to reach the oil field.

Makes you wonder why they have not attacked the pipe below this ground level coming in from the side to stop the flow? Maybe this is similar to the proposed drilling of 2 extra neighbouring pipes..

They are now engaged in cutting off the broken end and then plug it . I wonder how they are going to get the plug in place, in view of the pressure of the oil . I should imagine it will require explosive power to drive a plug in with sufficient force to jam it in so it wont be pushed back out.
You bore other holes to the same chamber. That way, when you seal one opening off, the pressure is relieved to the others.
It's not that fantastic a pressure.
