If you mean tame rats, then they do play during the day.  Our two were very active in the day time.
I kept them when I did all different shifts & they just adapted to me & slept when I did, played when I was awake. Rats are fab pets.

Yep Purplepixie they are great pets.

I've had a few over the past 10 years and they have all been little crackers.

But the last one was the best. he was called Pop and he was what I term a house rat.

His cage was always open and he came and went as he pleased. He did go out on little night time raids but he was a day time rat to. He  loved crisps and if u left them on the side by his cage he'd be out to pinch them in a flash. he never chewed wires or left a mess. he was a self service rat to. he learned to get the top off his food box and just helped himself. His only naughty moment was when he pinched a babies bottle in the middle of the night and chewed it up. By the morning there was nothing left.

He lived for nearly 4 years which I have been told is a ripe old age for a rat.

I do miss him, he was a little treasure.

no i do not think they are nocturnal as my friends is VERY VERY active in the day.
1 of mine squeezed into my knicker drawer & chewed big holes in all of them!!
rats are crepuscular. this means that they are awake at dawn and in the evening. they can be awake throughout the day too.
