I got three points on my licence and a £60 fine for doing 36mph in a 30mph zone. Obviously I informed my insurance company immediately, and they informed me that I would have to pay an additional £60 on my comprehensive insurance, and that I would be 'surcharged' for the next 3 years.
So, as my renewal was coming up, I shopped around and found a well known company that offered me like for like insurance actually cheaper than I was paying previously, even though I had declared my 3 points and the fine to them.
My recommendation is to shop around every year for insurance, even if you have no penalty points to declare. I find once an insurance company has hooked you, they then take advantage of your loyalty by inflating the premiums the next time the next years' payment is due.
I agree with all you've been told so far, except for BOL10X talking about informing your broker. I can understand BOL10X using a broker because of his medical condition, but with all the comparison sites around, I can't see much use for them nowadays. To me, it's another layer of administration that could be avoided, although I expext somebody will prove me wrong!
Anyway, I hope you don't lose out financially.
