Gun law ?
It is now known that Derick Bird, the Cumbria gunman, was threatening to get his gun and kill people over 9 months ago. Yet more proof that the existing law is just not being applied. We do not need new laws just correct application of the existing laws. It is now obvious that this guy repeatedly did things and made threats that should have ment his guns were confiscated but nothing happened.

Your point is a valid one but storing peoples guns in a local armoury ain't practical
How secure do you think that would have to be?
Plus what's to stop an employee there who loses the plot grabbing guns and going on the rampage?
Plus if Derrick Bird had had his guns stored in such a place, he still would have been able to access them and carry out his killing spree. All he would have needed was a valid reason for wanting his guns

Joeluke - The Armoury would just have to be made secure. Individual lock-cabinets with onwers only having keys/combinations.
Anyone feeling a little 'postal' would at least have to present themselves to the armoury in order to claim their weapons - this may have been deterrent enough in Derrick Bird's mind.

JTH: "There is, presently, NO goodreason to have a gun in your house *unless* you need one in the course of your employment"
A recent news story locally (for me anyway):
"Missouri mom uses gun to stop attempted rape of daughter
ASSOCIATED PRESS

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- A Cape Girardeau mother with a gun is being credited with stopping the attempted rape of her daughter.
The Southeast Missourian reports that 51-year-old Craig Kizer faces a variety of charges, including attempted rape, armed criminal action and burglary. He has no known address and did not have an attorney.
Police say Kizer had been working on the family's home as part of a renovation project, but was not staying there. The teen was in bed around 5:30 a.m. Sunday when Kizer came into her room with a knife and climbed on top of her.
When he set the knife down on the bed, the teen grabbed it and screamed.
The girl's mother came into the room with a gun, pointed it at the suspect and ordered him out of the house. Police later arrested him."
