Dell laptop failed after 22 months

My laptop has stopped working - at first I thought it might be a virus but I've had a friend who runs a computer repair business look at it, and unfortunately the screen has gone and cannot be repaired. I paid just over £800 for this laptop in August 2008. I know Dell only give a one year warranty but I feel it's not unreasonable to expect such an expensive item to last at least two years before it completely breaks. Has anyone experienced something similar and managed to get a refund? I get the feeling that I will have a fight on my hands.

If it can be proven that it has failed due to a manufacturing fault then you could try and get it repaired or a partial refund under the sale of goods act (1979) or even under the EU directive that states goods must last for a reasonable length of time (6years)

If they agree you probably wouldn't get a full refund as you have had nearly 2 years of use from it.

If no luck from dell you can probably get the screen replaced for about £100 - £150 (obviously this is a ball park figure as you've not said what laptop it is) by an independent repairer (don't get Dell to do it if they are going to charge!)
