word 2007

i am trying to open docs (that i have looked at before with 2007) and for some reason it now keeps coming up with "file convrsion" and for the life of me can i get it to open in a text i can read (english)? caqn i balls! it comes up with rubbish like $%^*&^^&%%%555000 h^%$£"55249 etc.

please help and soon!!!!

oh forgot to mention i have downloaded the conversion from microsoft but again nothing works.
