Now that many TV shows are broadcast on the internet with I-Player the BBC does not capitalise with this although programs viewed abroad have a pay per view element. Maybe plans are afoot to charge UK customers for this service. Murdoch is already charging users to read the Times online so maybe he could start a trend.
The BBC iPlayer cannot be accessed abroad.
BBC World (and possibly BBC America) show advertisements. It it incorporated advertising into iPlayer programmes and made them accessible all over the world, then a good amount of revenue could be generated.
Part of the problem is the BBC Trust who meddle a great deal in the BBC.s planning. There is not a Smartaphone app for the iPlayer even though it is madness not to have one. it has been blocked by the BBC Trust.

the BBC already carries advertising on its commercial outlets.
These include Radio Times and other magazines; UKTV, the commercial TV service partly owned by BBC Worldwide; and BBC World, its global TV news channel.
Indeed, the BBC World website already carries advertising for companies like Barclays, HSBC and Shell.

Really Gromit?
I have one on my Blackberry - although it only works over the 3 network or via wireless connection.
Incidently you don't need a TV licence for the iplayer because the programs are not simulcast (internet broadcast at the same time)
The BBC are considering doing this if they do you'd need to have a TV licence to use the iplayer.

Already here? Extract from TV Licensing notice just received: "Remember: even if you do not have a TV, under the Communications Act 2003, you still need to be covered by a licence if you watch or record TV on any other device. This includes computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders."
