becoming an employer - what legal things will i have to consider?

Hi, i wonder if you can help please. I am pregnant and when i give birth i will need to employ someone to help (mother's help) owing to my disabilities. I don't really want to get someone through an agency for a couple of reasons (a) more expensive and (b) want someone local. So i anticipate that i would employ someone local, perhaps who has kids in school to work school type hours. How on earth do i go about it, wher edo i start?

Hi bednobs, glad to hear that all is going well. You would still be advised to make sure that the person you choose has a CRB clearance as they will be working with a child, and that ideally they have had some sort of training in child care as well as being able to help you. There might be a lovely person out there just waiting for this sort of opportunity - why don't you ask first at your local volunteer bureau? They might give you some introductions, lots of people are volunteering for all sorts of work these days and some are highly qualified, just wanting to help out while they can't find paid work.
