what materials are safe to use to build your own fireplace, with a solid fuel fire?

This would be coverred by building regulations. There are a whole bunch of these dealing with fires and chimneys making up "Part J". They're not all that scary but there are a lot of them and you should know what they are.

Also remember that you need adequate ventillation which normally means an air brick
