Gilbert Colony?

Who is Gilbert and what colony did he esetablish and why did it fail?  Im working with the 13 original colonies and never heard of Gilbert.  Am I wrong to ask this question?  Any help will be greatly apperciated.

He was really earlier than the 13. Humphrey Gilbert was Walter Raleigh's brother in law. He set out to found a colony - before Ralegh himself got interested - but  things went wrong and he was drowned. He did claim Newfoundland for England. See here for biography
jno is correct if you mean Sir Humphrey Gilbert.  About two centuries earlier, Thomas Gilbert played a part in the founding of the Gilbert Islands (now part of Tuvalu), but I don't know why anyone should say that colony failed.
