Some people I know place used tea bags around their Azaleas.  Why does this in any way help the plant.  I think it just looks messy.

Azaleas prefer acid soil conditions.  Such conditions are to be found in clay and peaty soils.  Old teabags will produce tannic acid that will help to maintain those acidic conditions but normal compost should do just as well.  Just remember that azaleas absolutely hate lime so don't try to grow them in limestone or chalk soils.
