Sunday Telegraph £500 prize crossword June 20, 27 down: Plunderers, R_I_E_S.
RAIDERS or REIVERS? Both fit, in every sense, but I think of reivers more specifically in terms of pillage and plunder, than raiders. Opinions please.

The OED gives reiver as: A robber, a plunderer; a marauder, a raider.

The thing that might favor "raider" is that "reiver" is an archaic spelling of "reaver", and to reave means "To commit robbery; to plunder, pillage; to make raids. Now chiefly Sc."
