When I was at school the teachers who we knew were quick to use the strap were listened to in silence. The weak teachers were ignored. The threat of the strap worked with our class.
I'd say bring it back.

Most of you seem to be missing the point respect and good behavior BEGINS AT HOME!
Ultimately in roughly 95% of cases of undisciplined and unruly kids you have parents at home that let the smoke, drink swear start wearing makeup and adult skimpy clothes from a very young age and letting them stay out till late at night etc.. We need to be parents first and friends second! In other cases the parent unfortunately might be a single parent at work most of the time and the child starts picking up bad habits and sense of family which they are lacking from the local group/gang in which case you can't really blame the parent. If these kids are treated like kids and disciplined at home which is the source of discipline and taught that if they ever abuse or are rude to people adults or kids they will have a can of whoopa$$ opened on them then I believe that we can move forward in a positive way. To push this all on teachers and say if they were allowed to be violent that our communities would suddenly become a world filled with unicorns and rainbows is utter madness! If you were to now give teachers those powers Gbg, stabbings and shootings of teachers would go up by an unbelievable amount!
Gbg, ?
Lol GBH!
Fear and respect are not the same thing. I had teachers who were very gentle and very good at their jobs and got respect from every pupil they had, I had other teachers who were obviously in the wrong job, couldn't control anyone so put the fear of god into us all just so we'd listen. I'd like to know why you would want to see corporal punishment brought back zzxxee? Is this based on your own experiences with children and young people, or is this because the papers say they are running wild? My daughter is 14 and I know a lot of her friends and classmates, and I work with a lot of kids in my job. I live in an area of social and economic deprivation, but the majority of the children I deal with are great. They are friendly and helpful and very respectful. Yes they are more outspoken and confident than when I was that age, but they are also more socially aware and mature. There will always be a minority who are trouble makers, but they were belted every day when I was a kid and it didn't make a jot of difference to them. I suggest that you actually spend some time talking to youngsters and stop seeing them as some pack of feral animals that have to be beaten into submission so they know who's in charge - you can't even do that do a dog, why would you condone doing it to children?

I apologise for assuming you were pro corporal punishment, but you are pro something so the question still stands? What is it that makes you think 'something has to be done'? Do you have experience of children running riot? Or is it because you've heard that children are running riot? Since the 40's every generation has thought that the teenagers of that day were out of control and must be disciplined more so that they behave the way those adults did at that age.

...since 40BC at least, karenmac. I met a teacher last year who'd given up the job because he said children were rude, stayed up all night and slept in class, threw chalk at him, answered back, didn't do their homework... and this was in Libya!

"how can you respect a towering adult dishing out a barbaric punishment on a whim-just because he/she was having a bad day or just simply couldnt be arsed annoyed and used that as a teaching implement"

You respect them because once you've taken the corporal punishment then the likelihood is you ain't gonna wanna experience it again......the way you word it is well OTT making it sound like teachers only carried out corporal punishment for their own satisfaction.......now THAT is rubbish

^^ "my daughter was a brat at school but she's fine now"

Lack of discipline at home turns kids into brats

Discipline begins at home, if parents can't control their kids then those kids will act exactly the same at school (and also in everyday life)

I'm not the only one on this thread with a 'certain level of discipline for kids is a no bad thing' view, so why just single out my post?
