I have moved about all over the country during my life, and still have one or two good friends from each place. As bobbi and gran say, many acquaintances (and some of them very nice people), lots of colleagues, but not many I want to share my secrets with. Interestingly there was a thread on here the other night about blokes being friends with women - for several years I was delighted to have a chap as a best friend, no strings, just a good mate, we studied together too.
One. Mr Boo, he's my best friend.
I'm not really a social person (I can tell you're surprised!) so the only friends I have are other couples who are both our friends. My work colleagues are just that, folk I work with and I moved away from the area I grew up in many years ago, so no longer see any of my old friends, and to be truthful wasn't bothered about keeping any of those friendships.

PS also - mikmak's point about upbringing is true. Our family weren't very social, and so we didn't have parties (except as kids). We were taught to keep ourselves to ourselves - it takes many years before you find that it's good to let go, good to share sometimes. I think the saying is very true "If you want a friend, you have to be one yourself too".
But I don't want friends either? I'm very selfish with "me" time, and i find other peoples chatter about their dull lives (well, dull to me) mind numbingly tedious. Here's great, as when summet ores you, you just click elsewhere. Folk in real life tend to get a bit offended when you wander off from them mid sentence.
Noone has said what makes a good friend, i often feel that some of my 'friends' are not good friends, i think a good friend is someone you can rely on, who would be there for you if you needed them, the only person i can say who is is my mum, but i feel that my children are my best friends. I am a single mum and even though i see some of my friends often and we are 'close',my children are who i spend most of my time with and who's company i enjoy the most. I think i am a good friend but i don't feel i am treated well by some of my so called good friends, i have one who used to be a good friend but now makes me feel so hurt its hard to explain the things she does as its the way she does it. they are little things but when it happens all the time it makes you feel so hurt.
I also think a friend is someone who wants to share their life with you so spending lots of time together, talking about anything, good and bad, and listening too.
I have had good friends in the past but if they were true good friends i would still have them. I have three, my mum, and my two children
