what is the difference between a crumpet and a pikelet? is it just regional terminology?

In my experience, yes.What I called a crumpet in Surrey was a pikelet when I lived in the Midlands.

I'd choose crumpet every time....

If I remember correctly pikelets were square, and crumpets round, but the same thing really................

Pikelets are like flattened crumpets and have a slightly different texture. Much nicer but much harder to get hold of.
