Almost all the icons on my desktop have changed into the icon for MS Outlook and I can't get them back to normal. I have tried pressing refresh and playing around with the active desktop thing which I don't understand but to no avail. I have tried creating new short-cuts for Word, Excel and other programs but they also come out as the Outlook one. I'd really appreciate your help if anyone has a clue. Thanks.

Special icons such as IE or Outlook can be restored using the version of TweakUI corresponding to your OS. The Win 9x versions are on the CD but you may have to download the Windows 2000 one (search Google for TweakUI 2000).
