The battery has been on it's way out for ages so it's always plugged into the mains.
However, it won't start up now....power light is on and a battery light flashes on and off. If i buy a new battery will it start up??

Thanks

it should startup without a battery in it at all.

Unplug the power, remove the battery wait 2 minutes then plug the power in and try again.

no, still won't start. I have recovery discs but it won't even start the disc. Is there some combo I can press on power up??
Does anything come up on the screen at all?

You can also try unscrewing one of the little panels on the bottom that covers the RAM, just remove the RAM chips and then put them back in, then try again.

tried this....nothing on screen at all. Any ideas??
Can you hear the hard drive wirring when you press the power on/startup button? As Chuck suggested, give the ram chips a second look and make sure they are definately seated properly. Has the laptop had a knock recently? Maybe take it to a pc/laptop repair shop (not pc world!). If the drive is ok, they might be able to retrieve the contents if they are important.
