Wfes Laptop.Windows XP suddenly boots up with Acronis Loader instead of Wndows XP

What is going on?

May have been the result of an auto update. Try a system restore to a date before this happened.

Is it dual boot? (ie with more than one operating system on it?)

if it's not the easiest way would probably be to put the standard windows boot record back.

Do you have a windows XP cd that came with the computer? if you do you can boot from that, select recovery console when given the option, once it has booted into the recovery console type "fixmbr" (no quotes) and hit enter and the standard boot record will be re-written.

chuck......thanks....it is dual boot.

Sounds complicated as I haven't got the original disc.
Acronis page offers me the option of windows and when I click on, the duel option page opens and away I go.

Chuck...any ideas why it should just appear?

Don't know why it's coming up, but acronis's website state that the "fixmbr" is the way to remove it.

What is the laptop and what OS's does it dual boot between?

Where does one type.....fixmbr?

It's a Fujitsu Siemens, but she is getting a new Acer tomorrow.

Vista and Windows XP

You need either the recovery disks (are you sure you got none with it?) or to start the recovery process from the hard drive (if it has a recovery partition)

As it's vista don't use fixmbr as that's for XP based systems. see here for how to run the startup repair for vista.

You have not got a CD in the drive with Acronis on it have you?

It may be booting from that.
