Lap top died any chance of recovering files?

My lap top for no reason frooze and I have not been able to start it again. I have taken it in to get it repaired (not holding out too much hope) and they said they are going to scan my harddrive and see if they can recover anything. Just wondering if anyone can tell me if they are likely to recover anything or should I presume it is all gone.

Not sure if that is a stupid question or not - have no idea what scanning a hard drive is.

I know someone who runs a computer repair business and they often send hard drives away to recover data so it must be possible.  Hope it works !!!!

It would depend on the state of the hard drive. Sometimes they can set up a faulty hard drive as a 'slave' in another computer, scan the drive, and recover information that is then put onto the 'master'. The data recovered would then be put onto a new drive that has had the operating system already installed for the laptop in the same process ('master' back to 'slave'), then put it into the laptop. It takes time, but if it works then all is well. Hope it gets sorted without too much expense.

did they say it was the hard drive at fault ? if it was something else like the ram memory then fear not the drive just needs connecting to another computer and the wanted info transfered. beware i think u may get done. the pc may be dead but unless the drive actually went wrong or was corruped by say a virus (unlikely) then there is no problem so they shouldn't be telling u they put the drive thru a 007 inspection and ur luky they retrived the info and want paying lots of money.
