Can anyone enlighten me? We have had this lovely old box for years and years. It just sits on a cupboard and gets junk stuffed into it until it's full and then I empty it and we start all over again! It's 12.5 inches tall and 8.5 inches diameter (31 x 22 cms). It's lined with a lovely burgundy coloured felt. The clasp was never there so I don't know what it was like I'm afraid. It has a carrying strap on the lid. I'm pretty certain it's wood. At first I thought - hat box, but don't you think it's rather thin for that. I'd love to know what it is before I fill it with junk again.
It looks like a top hat,hat box to me. The fact that the felt lining is a burgundy colour, would infer a male link too,i think. Love your garden btw ;-)
That is a truly beautiful box - I would say it's a top hat box too, from the height of it. Must have belonged to a very elegant gentleman. I would get it valued, it might be worth something!
