my clio has got a light come on the dashboard in the shape of a spanner,would like to know what it is before I get the garage to check it out

Service indicator. Take it the garage anyway to get it serviced.

That's the engine checklight. Usually signifies a problem stored in the ECU.
It can mean overdue servicing
Fault on many of the engine/transmission components or sensors

Needs plugging into diagnostic or a Sun Scanner to read the fault(s)
as soon as practicable.
