hayfever injection

i used to have a hayfever injection that literally gave me back my life outdoors. since we have changed doctors im sure they wont give it me. i asked on reception about it and they had never heard of it. i used to get a prescription from the doctor then go and pick up the medication, return to the surgery and let the nurse administer the injection. how can i get the injection if a doctor says no. im willing to pay but think its prescription only and also who would then inject it?

awwww could u let me know the name please cos im suicidal with hayfever - honestly.....ermmm i have heard that you must be forcefull with getting this prescribed....or i know its prob not as easy but could u get a 2nd opinion x

my daughter is in such a state with hayfever this year, she went to see the doctor, who said they can only offer her nasal drops, eye drops and antihistermines! she is still in an awful state!..................Why don't they offer this injection to hay fever sufferers every year? they know they will suffer for months!......................

It's a steroid so is only recommended for occasional use, not as a routine cure for hay fever. The date on this article is however 2006 - so it might be delicensed now, or too expensive for use in general practice.

However read this one too, it looks like you are not the only one being refused treatment this year - http://www.netdoctor....opic.php?t=55333&f=31 - which suggests to me that there is now further evidence that long-term usage might be risky.
Your GP should explain why this medication is no longer available to you, if you have had it before - yuor previous treatments will be on your medical record which will have transferred with you when you moved doctors.

i know that when i was given it before the risk of osteoporosis was mentioned but i wasnt too concerned as i was only having the injection once a year.

I was only told about this injection today and didnt know the name of the drug until now I am suffering very badly and not finding anything over the counter helpful I just did a search on kenalog on irish websites and one states that this drug was discontinued for hayfever use in the UK in 1999 but is still available in ireland for that purpose I might ring my gp about it but I suspect it would be far to expensive for me and this site lists the side effects as gastrointestinal/uterine bleeding or scarring for prolonged use.Might have to go back to piriton.

It has been exceptionally bad this year - the long damp winter has made everything very polleny.

Both steroids but INVALUABLE in the treatment of severe hay fever. Long term use is not a consideration if they are given only once a year.

Expense should not come into the equation.

Sadly though, it sometimes does these days doc, prescribing formulary can be very restricted in certain area both due to cost and efficacy, so - if you can get it at all - it may have to be a private prescription which could cost. I couldn't find out last night if Keralog is still in BNF but I don't have an Athens login to be able to access the site. trionam's post says it's been withdrawn in the UK for over 10 years.

Have you tried seeing an allergy specialist? Years ago I got a series of injections to make my body immune to what I was allergic to and my regular bouts of tonsilitis stopped straight away. This was in France but I'm sure there must be specialists in the UK too. This year for the first time (after 20 years) I did get a sore throat and a bit of a runny nose but it's been an exceptional year for allergies.

I got the kenalog injection one year (from a locum) and went back to ask for it the next year. My ordinary dr wouldn't prescribe it for the reasons detailed above, but sent me to the immunology clinic at the hospital

They started me on a three year course of desensitising Grazax tablets which you start in the winter time and take every day. After taking them for a year and a half, my (previously horrendous) hay fever has subsided and this will apparently get better over the rest of the course.

I have had one slight sneezing incident this year, but it was very mild, and that's all! I used to be crippled! You can still take antihistimines alongside this until it kicks in but I would highly recommend it!

mmm, maybe a reaction what has happened today, what do you think? we walked to a pub down a narrow almost overgrown alley. i had long trousers on. there were nettles and brambles and flies. in the pub i had a double vodka and red bull which contains taurine and is a stimulus. on way back home my legs felt really itchy. i had shaved them today by the way. when we got in, i was so so itchy and had red lumps so thought i had been bitten. i put savlon on first and then antihistamine cream hc54 or something. was dying to scratch! then small little bumps came up too, only from ankles to knees. i took a antihistamine tablet and it subsided after 30 minutes. i really dont know what it was, wasnt bites and dont think and undergrowth didnt get me through my trousers. wondering as ive had this cortisone injection whether it was a reaction to what i drank, if not then a mystery. seems odd how i shaved there too and no other part of body affected but wasnt little red dots you sometimes get after shaving. any ideas anyone? weird too how my injection didnt help this but tablet doing same job did. i still have large red lumps on my legs but not itchy now. what a mystery!
