this is given as the birthplace of a 3x great grandfather, James McMullen, on the 1911 census (the only record of him I can find in England, although he was in Liverpool from at least 1872, when his son Richard was born) but as far as I can find out it doesn't exist. Can anyone think what the modern name of this place might be?? Even a county would help! ty

I've seen the 1891 Churchill connection but I don't thinks it's the same person, Richard was born in 1872 in Liverpool, although I can't find him on the 1881 census to see if he had any siblings. The earliest I've found him is 1901, but which time he was married with kids of his own.
I think you'll need the birth certificate to have any chance. Besides the various surname variations the Irish were notorious for swapping their christian names around. e.g. Joseph John would be Joesph on one census and John on another, so to have any degree of certainty you're going to need the mother's name.
