I had the letter a while ago about my details going onto the NHS Spine database and decided I wasn`t too bothered about it. I`ve now decided after talking to a friend in the medical world that I would like to opt out. Is it too late? I know there was a cut off date but can I opt out after that date? After all, if someone was to come to the UK and join the NHS tomorrow, they would probably have the option of opting out so it must be possible to do somehow

on paper, it would be quite easy to get away with checking a record such as you describe (although GUM clinic records aren't usually kept with the general record) On the spine system such an access would immediately be noticed and flagged and the person would be dealt with most severely.
Literally you can lose your job (and clinical registration so no more nursing job EVER) and never ever get anykind of reference that doesn't include that unauthorised access, you would basically be kissing goodbye to ever working in health (NHS or private) again plus i can't think of many other places who would employ you, that one misdemeanor would follow you everywhere.

it's been put temporarily on hold until GP's think there has been enough awareness about it by the NHS.
Once your record is created, it cannot be deleted, but it can be hidden so noone can see it.

Go along to your Doctors and ask for an opt out form. They should be able to give you the answer your looking for.
