Networking cable / Setting up netgear router with speedtouch modem?
Hello,
Anyone know what the networking cable is called that has a telephone-type plug on either end but one is larger than the other?
Finally got a router and am trying to sort it out, I have a speedtouch modem currently and it doesn't appear to have enough ports in it for this to work?!
Cheers =]

Tried plugging the router in instead of modem but computer just has no internet connection then =S ? I bought the router (a netgear something or other) from e-bay because it was so much cheaper, but it didn't come with a set up CD, I thinking possibly it should have?

Nah, you don't need a CD, you do need to enter your login detils into the router before it will connect though. I'd suggest resetting the router before doing anything as it's second hand, to do this power it up and then use a paperclip or similar to hold the little, recessed, rest button on the back in for 10 seconds
Now connect up the router to the phone line and connect your computer to it using the ethernet cable, then open a browser on your computer and enter the following in the address bar http://192.168.1.1 . Once prompted enter the user name admin and the password password (or 1234) and this should load the routers admin screen....now click on the basic settings link on the left and enter your username and password for your ISP account, click on apply at the bottom, wait a bit and see if you get a connection.

Still no good, reset the thing, plugged it in, tried the address and got this:

restart your computer while it is connected to the netgear and try again.
If still no joy click the start button > run and type cmd into the run box and hit enter, then in the black window that comes up type in ipconfig and hit enter and then post back what it says next to ip address (or ipv4 address) and default gateway.

opps, forgot, on some netgear routers the address is http://192.168.0.1
no problems...
Make sure you now either disable the wireless (if you don't plan on using it) or setup security on it as the default setting is unsecured.
