I had my tongue pierced when I was 18. I realised it was a bit gross so I took it out about a year later. I'm 23 now and was bored the other day so I put it back in to see what it looked like, still gross but I surprised myself that the hole was still there.
Can I suggest that if you get it done you try a plastic piercing after it's healed because the metal can seriously damage your teeth.
Good luck whatever choice you make.

no, don't get a plastic one as these crack and split and can be dangerous. As long as you avoid clicking the metal on your teeth they should be ok. The main reason people damage thier teeth on the metal ones is that the bars are too long which allows the piercing to move about. The balls should sit snugly on either side of your tongue. The piercer will use a long bar to pierce with to allow for swelling but they ought to suggest you go back in a few weeks to get the correct size bar fitted after it has healed.
hi where i live it costs around 25 which is pretty good. my tongue took about a week to heal its really quick coz it usually takes 3 weeks to heal properly. its only painful for a few days afterwards but stick to soup for a few days not solids omg does it hurt if u eat solids. if you take your bar out after a few years the hole will close over but the taste buds will not grow back i dunno why they just dont so u have a numb spot in the middle of your tongue which is pretty cool coz you can eat hot stuff and it doesnt hurt. down here you have to be 16 to have your tongue peiced but i was 15 coz we know the man who does it so if you want it done for a cheaper piece get to know the piecer first .im not goin to say it was really painful because its not that bad but it does hurt you have to have alot of willpower to do it lol! and it is totally worth it i love mine and so does every1 else at my skool so its pretty good when you have it peiced
