It was introduced in 1979 because of concerns over sex, voilence and bad language. It was imposed at 9pm and has remained in place since then. Last November the Government announced the watershed would stay in place and there are now tighter controls and more effective watchdogs monitoring what is shown on television. As ever, the channels insist parental responsibility must play a large part in children's viewing.
