Net Framework 2

Hi

I am trying to install a piece of demo software. The installer aborts saying that I need Net Framework 2 on my system.
I am running XP Home +SP2
Is installing this extra software easy to do?

That's not the latest version of Microsoft's NET framework but, since you're using XP, it's probably advisable that you stick with version 2.

Just a FYI Chris, the net frameworks don't work in a sequential way. I.E. if the software says it needs net.framework 2 then it needs 2 installed even if 3 is already installed.

In addition to the other answers, you *REALLY* should consider downloading and installing service pack 3 for XP.

You ought to be able to do this from Windows Update - in fact, I'm surprised it's not not constantly nagging you - or from here:

Also, just for your information (and this may be of no interest to you at all), Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft:

Oh, didn't spot that!, totally agree, you need to run a full windows (or preferably microsoft) update about 2-3 times to ensure you have all the latest patches if you are still on service pack 2

(Mark, I've been meaning to ask, surely MS ending main stream support will only affect people with a MS support contract? the security updates will continue for some time yet which is the main thing for home users.... MS have only just stopped the updates for windows2000)

I'm running XP+SP2. (Partly because I'm too lazy to bother with updates, partly because I've heard too many horror stories about SP3 and partly because I work on the principle of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"). I've also got NET framework with no problems.

Careful if you have an amd processor. A fix is needed for sp3. Mine continue to "loop" and reboot after installing sp3. Had to uninstall and apply fix. All ok now.

That was my view also. I heard so many people relating all the things that stopped working after SP3 that I have never bothered. My system runs everything I need with SP2, until now.
However I will look into SP3 as well as Net Framework.

No, it's everyone. If you have a problem with Windows XP, Microsoft won't help you.

Like I said, for the vast majority of home users, this is of no consequence at all. I merely mention it on these occasions in case people don't actually realise it, or even that newer versions exist. Stable though XP was, I would always advise home users to consider upgrading to Windows 7, bypassing Vista totally...

Installing SP3 for XP is only going to make things better.

If you have an Intel processor, you are "good to go", as our American cousins say.

If you have an AMD processor, install the AMD XP SP3 patch first:

I have Intel chip so no probs there.
Win 7 will happen with next computer. Probably within the next 6 months, depending on funds.

MICROSOFT have NOT said this.

They have said they will cease supporting up to SP2 XP.
So it is in everyones interest to install SP3.

Install the AMD patch BEFORE applying SP3 .. IF you have AMD processor.
