Registering an extension phone to the base

Hi, does anyone know whether it's possible to register a different model phone to a base station?
I've got a BT Graphite 1500 Answerphone, which is faulty. I want to know if I can get a different model and register my 2 additional handsets that came with the Graphite 1500.
