'Section 18' is an extremely serious offence. It's one step down from 'attempted murder', and carries the same maximum penalty of life imprisonment. It's an 'indictable only' offence, which means that it must be dealt with by a Crown court.
Wherever possible a defence barrister will seek to get the charge down to either 'Section 20' (GBH) or to 'ABH'. To see the legal definitions that apply, read paragraphs 45 to 67 here:

I'd like to link to the sentencing document on the Sentencing Guidelines Council website but they've recently redesigned the site and there's an error which prevents me from doing so. Section 18 sentences are on page 13 of that document. (See page 15 for Section 20 and page 17 for ABH). Those sentences refer to a first-time offender, convicted after a trial. Previous convictions can see the sentencing range pushed higher. An early guilty plea can see a sentence cut by one third. The actual time in prison is usually half of the nominal sentence.
