Epson Perfection 3490 Photo (Scanner)

A few ago months I fresh installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and well pleased with it as well. At long last I decided to install the above scanner in order to copy some photo's.
Plugged it in via USB and Windows could not find any drivers. Went to Epson.co.uk and downloaded the appropriate drivers for Windows 7. On clicking the downloaded file it starts to install but then stops and I get an error message more or less saying the drivers are incorrect for my version of Windows. I have triple checked that I have the right file and even went to Epson USA to download another file, but I get the same result with that.
Any idea's what I'm doing wrong? Anyone else had problems with Epson scanners and Windows 7?

ps the scanner worked fine in Vista 64 bit.

It would help if you told us the name of the file you downloaded. It should be epson13829.exe

Sorry for the delay in answering - I wanted to test the driver for my Epson Perfection on Win7 64 bit.

Unfortunately I don't have the same model as you (I have a 2480), but I've downloaded and installed the driver and it all works fine (admittedly, the welcome message told me it was for Vista 32 bit, but I think that's just a cockup on their part).

The only other suggestions I can offer:
1)
Unplug the scanner
Right-click Computer and choose Properties
Click Device manager
If you can see a non-working driver for the scanner, uninstall it.
Restart the machine (with the scanner still disconnected)
Try installing the software with the scanner software - you should be asked to connect the scanner it at some point.

2)
If that doesn't work, (at the risk of sounding patronising) double-check that you are running the 64 bit OS:
Right-click computer and choose Properties
Check that it says "System Type: 64-bit Operating System"

3)
If that doesn't help, proceed with your plan to throw it out the window. :-)

Did'nt quite work out as you posted, but you gave me enough clues to figure it out.

1) Did as you said, nothing under scanner listed but found 'unknown device' so uninstalled that and restarted pc with scanner disconnected.

Windows started and immediately tried to install drivers on its own and failed. Clicked on the epson13829.exe file and it again went part way through installation and failed, but this time refered to a file in C\Users\SlackAlice\AppData\Local\Temp\\setup.
ini

So I went there and noticed that my Users folder was 'locked' which I thought was wrong, and that there was a folder in there called epson325814eu.zip which I did not know anything about.
Called a friend of mine who has the same O/S as me and he had a look at his Users\\AppData folder and his was not locked.
So I took a chance and unlocked my Folder using Administrators privileges and removed the epson folder. Restarted pc.
Windows tried again to install drivers and failed. Clicked on the epson13829.exe file and everything went through like a dream. Connected scanner and it works fine.
Thanks to you I can scan two 25yr old photo's and not only keep them but raise a smile on someones face in Thailand when i send them a copy. These photo's were thought to have been lost some time ago, but my cousin found them a couple of days ago.
