How strange! (from the Essex boy)
Anyhow, what part of Essex, it's a fairly large place and you are not seeing the best of it around southend way!
If you want decent seafood get over to Mersea island and visit the company shed (you'll need to bring your own bread, wine and condiments but the seafood is the best ever)

if you come this way towards north Essex a bit then Colchester is OK for shopping, Mersey Island has good seafood, Dedham vale (constable country) is really pretty and you can get a rowing boat out on the river, Go a little bit further out then Long melford is a nice village with some antique shops (though it's actually in Suffolk)
about 10 years ago Coggeshall was the main antiques place in Essex, but pretty much all the antique shops have gone now.

Just up the road from you (and definitely worth a visit):

(Oh, just as I was about to click 'Submit' I see that Rowanwitch has already suggested the same. Oh well, what the heck . . .)

Thankyou Chris & Rowen, We had thought of Battlesbridge, we have been before but yonks ago, its certainly something I would like to do, and there's a pub there that does an excellent roast.
Youe sugestion CF sounds lovely but, I'm not sure whether I could get my mobility scooter in a rowing boat. We like Mersey, we had our 30th wedd/anni in a hotel there.
Perfect. Dot. sorry I got it wrong. I live 15 min car ride from Kursal
Thankyou for all your comments folks.
