making lables clear

What's the easiest way to make number lables which relate to a key clear as to what the lables are indicating, when only some of the lables have room for arrows?

Plus a way that only uses black, white a grey would be more useful but if highlighting is the only way then I'll have to.

And it needs to look neat.

And I can't blow it up so that it's big enough to clearly show lables the way that I've tried to do it.

This is a picture so far with what i tried to do with the arrows, but I got stuck on places such as the kicking strap.

Aha, I can never remember which one to use.

I just looked and there's no arrows at all . . . anyway what do you think? are they clear enough as it is, there'll be a key next to it, with the names for the numbers so if you have a rough idea it should be obvious where the number is indicating?
Mollykins- for once I have no idea what you are asking. Do you mean LABELS rather than LABLES?
Ah, your follow-up posts weren't there when I started typing.
Do you have a picture and you want to put arrows on and then some sort of label at the end of the arrow? A line/arrow from each number pointing to the item is a good idea. You can then put a table at the side. Putting text on the picture would probably make it too cluttered.
Question Author
I'm open to suggestions its just that the kicking strap, transom and boom (number 10, 7 and 11) aren't that clear but to put arrows in the small space i've got might make it too cluttered. Plus if I highlight etc in some way I can indicate that the hull is all of the bottom rather than just where the arrow points.
Question Author
Yes i meant labels.
Question Author
Plus 7 could be the transom or horse (which you can barely see) and are directly above/below each other so i'm wondering if I should lable 7 as being both and when I do my lesson explain it to them . . . . you're a teacher factor! I just remembered. . . . any hints ?
If things are too small to label easily then have you considered breaking it down into 2 or 3 sections and blowing each one up?
or this sort of thing to show a expanded view of the parts you want

What i'm imagining it would look like wouldn't be recognisable as a boat, anyway I only want these handouts to be a a5 size.
Question Author
hhhmmm good idea, don't know if I have room though.
Question Author
How would I do that though . . .?
Question Author
Or what about if I do thin arrows for specific things, then chunkier ones for larger areas such as the bow then an even bigger one for the hull?
Molly ..
What you are referring to is called "marking up".
You can do in big programs like Corel, but if you can find Snagit, it had an editor attached with mark-up tools (Lines, arrows, boxes, any colour, etc) You can open existing capture or make a new one.

AHHH thanks.
