When an insect is caught in a spider's web does that mean than any old spider can enjoy a meal or do they all respect each other's homes and only eat what they've caught in their own web?

Poke a spiders web with a bit of grass or something and watch the spider run out. It needs to get out quickly and subdue its prey otherwise it may struggle free- so certainly for your average web- only one spider.
