Why should the long term unemployed be entitled to social housing?
With millions of long term unemployed taking social housing in prime areas are they not denying those able to work from living accommodation close to their work? If you are unemployed and unlokely to find work does it matter where you live? According to todays paper there will be another 500,000 on the homes waiting list.
Nobody is suggesting the existing tenants are thrown out onto the streets but with a reduction in the armed forces and many barracks lying empty they could be rehoused in them. Also nobody is suggesting the long term unemployed happens because of the will to find a job.
But instances like nurses not being able to find accommodation close to where they work are widespread. It applies to many other occupations.

The country has a debt of £156bn hanging round its neck and it needs to pay this off in the next few years.
Everyone, yes everyone is going to suffer!
The unemployed are not exempt!
We should look after the people that matter most, whether its the nurses or others doing important jobs.
Get Real!!

Harpy So are you saying that because work cannot be guaranteed for every day of the year the workshy don't have to work at all ?
As a matter of fact itinerant workers are needed for agricultural work for most of the year. Especially nowadays with the use of polytunnels.
We are repeatedly told by the government that they they can't clamp down on immigration because we need the immigrants to do the jobs that we won't. So they work and we live on benefits.

The thing with 'itinerant' workers is that they need to move a lot in order to follow the work. So-if we are to put the long-term unemployed in these jobs-what is to happen to their families? Do the spouses and children move also? Shouldn't we be assuring that families stay together-and in one place?
Ok, so we put them all into massive camp type things, away out in the middle of nowhere. Obviously they're not going to be happy with this so we'll need big fences, guards and watchtowers to make sure they stay in and do as they're told. They'll need something to do while they're there and some way of contributing towards the costs - what about hard labour? Then when they become too much of a drain on society or we decide the country would be better off without them, what about building big gas chambers so we could dispose of huge numbers at once? Oh, wait a minute, I think someone already did this....
modeller my friend has just gone down south same as he does every year, has done for well over twenty years . He will work 12, 14 hours plus a day seven days a week for the next couple of months. You will have a bigger chance of makng me believe in aliens from Mars than convincing me you know anything about farms.
Please post a link to me saying the workshy should not work. Tick Tock i am waiting

Some of the houses in Army barracks are made of a very high specification. These could be reserved for families.
Couples without children or lone adults could be housed in the barracks.
If our troops have had to live in them why should anyone think they should be treated any more leniently?
Karenmac all soldiers depots have high wire fencing around the perimeter, Guards could be stationed at the gates, most of them are armed these days.
This scheme could also encompass private lettings. Why should the British taxpayer have to pay £2000 pw to pay for immigrants.

There have been a number of reports in the news in recent years about how poor family housing is for forces families. A large percentage rate their housing as inadequate or sub-standard. But you see this as being fine for the families of not just the long-term unemployed-but also our forces? Why should anyone be made to live in housing that is not fit for purpose?

Harpy I'm sorry I don't understand your answer if it was an answer. I suggested that rather than paying thousands of immigrants to work in this country we should utilise as much as possible the long term unemployed who at the moment would rather live on benefits .
What that has to do with your friend working 12 hours a day or my knowledge of farming I don't know. You said fruit picking was not a permanent job and therefore I assume that is an excuse for not working at all. No wonder we have 2 million unemployed on benefits whilst employing a similar number of immnigrants.

I now see your problem you don't know how to use the AB . You keep using the wrong terms: the word link means a 'web address ' whereas you were referring to a quote, Indicated like this:
# modeller (19:46 on Mon 26/Jul/10) Harpy So are you saying that because work cannot be guaranteed for every day of the year the workshy don't have to work at all ?#
Now that is sorted out. I suggested that there are many jobs available, which are currently being done by thousands of immigrants which could be done by the long term unemployed.
I gave examples such as fruit picking and clearing derelict sites. Jobs that few people in this country want to do. Incidently 2.6 million itinerant immigrants are doing temporay jobs throughout the year.
Your excuse for not using the unemployed was to say fruit picking was only temporary work.
I therefore asked you the question above :
Now maybe you can answer the question : Is the fact that some work is only temporary a good enough reason for the workshy not to work at all. ?

To try and settle this feud between Harpy and modeller, perhaps we can go back to my earlier post (16:07 yesterday).
I said then that a different approach needs to be adopted for those who are out of work through no fault of their own but would like to work and those who have never, and have no intention of ever working. Of this latter group there are at least hundreds of thousands and possibly somewhere between one and two million (and I’m not including those who are allegedly too ill to work, simply those who are unemployed).
Over the past decade or so this country has had to import vast armies of labour from abroad to fill admittedly low paid but vital jobs. Meantime, the one or two million idle poor continue to be idle spending their time watching daytime TV punctuated with a stroll to the pub or betting shop, or perhaps to do a little decorating for “cash in hand”. Just look around any reasonably sized town and you will see them. I come across large numbers of them in some of the work that I do.
It is ludicrous in the extreme for a nation to have to import people (who have no difficulty gaining the jobs which the settled population have been unable to secure) whilst there are vast armies of unemployed.
The reasons are manifold and the solutions are not straightforward. But please don’t believe that work is not available for those who want to do it. It may not be glamorous work; it may not be as lucrative as the benefits that some people receive (and there’s probably the rub); it may not be where people would like it to be. But it is there and this country will never prosper when it is forced to import labour to keep vital services and industries going whilst at the same time it is paying people to sit at home doing nothing.
