I need to unscrew the ignition barrell of my car but it's an odd 'star' shaped head on the screw (not the classic flat head or phillips) and also, I only have a couple of inches in which to manipulate the 'driver'.. I refuse to pay the bloody mechanics £300 when I know how to do it myself bar this darn screw!!! Can I buy a little driver from Homebase (or similar) or will I have to tap up an old boyfriend with a mechanic mate...? (not an enjoyable proposition!!)

Yip - you can get these in most screwdriver/socket sets. They're usually the only ones i have left when i go looking for a philips head.

It sounds as if you've got a "star-shaped" Torx headed screw, or possibly a hexagonal Allen screw. You can buy a set of Torx screwdrivers (£7 at B&Q) or a set of Allen keys (metric or imperial?) at your local DIY store.

If not near B&Q, try Homebase, Wickes, Focus or any such superstore. Remember to check the screwhead carefully to determine whether it is Torx or Allen key. If the latter it could be imperial (older ignition barrel) or metric (more modern or foreign manufacture).

Those starfish shaped screws can be somewhat problematic hippy. Grit your teeth and beg in B&Q instead.
