errmm...if I knew nothing of the literary reference-yes. It is a pretty name. But a lot of younger people may not know of the association, so it won't matter to them.

I can see where you're coming from Lisa. I knew a girl who named her daughter Roxanne, just after the single came out, and there was always that association of the girl in the song being a prostitute. I'm sure most people have forgotten about that now and it's just a name, but not one I would have chosen. Same goes for Lolita - although the girl in the book was actually called Dolores- Lolita was just a nickname.

My brother wants to call his baby this if it's a girl. I know it's up to them and I'll get used to it.....doesn't help that I have a dog called Lola either....lol

One of my good friends is called Lolita. Most people call her Loli. I guess unless you are of a certain age (which she is) the name may not mean a great deal these days?

It is a very common Spanish name.
Tesco did sell a range of child's bedroom furniture called Lolita and removed / renamed it after complaints, but a newspaper survey showed that many people do not associate 'Lolita' with anything, especially the younger generation.
I have no problem with it, it's a pretty name although its meaning is 'sorrows'. Lola is the same name.

The name's origin is 'sorrows' relating to Christs suffering on the Cross. It is predominately a European Catholic name and the association to the book is relatively recent.
Just as Damien is an old name meaning 'tame' but is now associated with a horror film.
The meaning of names is irrelevant - I have known many Angelas who were far from angelic.
