Can I rent my house to my mum
I hope someone can help me with this question. I am moving away with my family. Currently my mum rents a room nearby. A few months ago my brother was invloved in a serious accident and is disabled. Both my mum, who is 72 yrs old and my brother are on DSS (benefits). Furthermore, i am happy to rent this to my mum & brother at a price lower than the market rate.
Can I rent my house to them via the council? Main reason is that they will both be at a place together and help each other; i will know for certain that they are both safe; i will not have to worry about the trustworthy of the tenants. (In the pas my sister paid through her nose to get her house back from council tenants).

As in the other place you have asked this question, Eddie is wrong. Whilst it is fine to rent a house to a relative, housing benefit cannot be paid in these circumstances - and I presume this is what you men when you say your Mum is 'on DSS'. So yes you can rent the house to them, but the Council will no longer pay their rent.

In that case I apologise, I am basing my advice on what I was told when I worked in a Council housing department, namely that if a property was rented to a close family member then benefits would not be payable on it. Either the rules have changed or the policy was being incorrectly implemented where I worked. For questions such as this I do only answer with facts rather than opinions but am grateful to be corrected where wrong.
