Specifically; internet access. I have a Belkin Surf router but am currently not able to consistently connect to the internet via wireless, should I purchase a

Belkin 150N Wireless USB Network Adapter - 802.11 n?

Would this solve the issue or be a waste of my hard earned? I can't have a cable running through my house despite the greater efficiency of hard wired access as my children keep tripping over it! TIA

"Would this solve the issue"
Doubt it.
Have you not got a phone socket nearer to your computer? If so, you could just move the router.
Is the router you are using a N or B/G/N type ? If it is one that supports all 3 formats then it should be okay but if not you may have to get a N series adapter. Remember that wireless operation has many issues in the placement of your router and types of walls in your home as well as interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones and other peoples networks in your area.
