This seems perfectly plausible to me. Eels always head for safety and if that means forcing their way into a small dark hole then so be it.

I was fishing, caught an eel, tried to grab it to disgorge it and it slipped through my hand (didn't have any newspaper to grab it with). The high pitched squeeling noise I heard was my fishing line slicing through the bit of skin between my thumb and forefinger.
