Middle lane drivers...
50 Answers
Why-O-why are people so content with driving in the middle lane of a half empty motorway, if there is no other vehicles in the inside lane, when the Highway Code clearly states that the centre lane is used for over-taking then to return to the inside lane?
If you are one of these people, drive properly or get off the motorway. You are a menace!!

Without knowing even the basics the link can only be by sheep for sheep sho really don't understand road craft.
I assume that the driver of the transit/long wheel based vehicle in the last link posted is the idiot (youtube video). I can only assume that he/she looks at the speedometer after following the lorry in front because he/she isn't happy at how slow they are going. Then when the lanes split on the M25 the driver of the vehicle is allowed to overtake said lorry. After the lanes split and go from 3 lanes into 2 the van looks like he/she's having to pass people on the left hand side because they are going 'slow', this is what I assume anyway.... My only concern is that the speed limit at this point is 40 mph, no wonder he/she's clocking along like they are in a F1 car. As far as middle lane drivers are concerned, I drive like R1Geezer (although not as fast ;p), steady 70mph (min) although if I see someone approaching in my rear view mirror I will pull into the left hand lane. I always stick to the left hand lane if the road is empty but if there is a convoy of lorrys/slow moving vehicles I won't bother to move from the middle to the left lane, if I'm traveling at 70mph and someone wants to overtake me, get in the 3rd lane. Why should I make it easy for someone speeding? I bet if R1Geezer saw me in the middle lane he would do like everyone else and just pull out into the 3rd lane before I had even moved over (as a rule if i see someone gaining on me in the left hand lane I will move into it giving time for the driver to move out and overtake). On an empty motorway there is absolutely no reason to tailgate or undertake (motorways are boring, changing lanes every now and then makes it slightly less boring).

From the Highway code...........
Lane discipline

You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking.
As far as I know, the MIDDLE LANE is NOT the INSIDE lane!

I am not a sheep. I follow driving rules because I recognise they aid traffic flow and make driving safer. The rules may not be perfect but they work because the majority follow them. If individuals decide they know better and drive to their own rules then they compromise everyone else. That is why they are morons. Suppose I am in lane 1 and catching up with someone in lane 2 and a third person is behind me and going faster than both of us. As far as I am concerned, the person in front is breaking the rules. I am not telepathic, so I don't know they are driving to a set of rules which they think is better than everyone else's. I can only assume they do not know what they are doing, therefore it is both illegal and unsafe to pass in lane 1. I therefore have to choose between slowing down, i.e. being compromised, or compromising the driver behind by moving to lane 3. Once the third car has passed I can use lane 3 to overtake and then can give the driver in lane 2 an appropriate hand signal.
I am not a frequent motorway driver but when I do I tend to use the middle lane most of the time. Having said that I try to keep my speed in that lane as near to the max speed limit as I can depending on the speed of vehicles in front of me, if they are slow or "plodding along at 40/50mph" I will pull out and overtake in the right hand lane and then drop back into the middle lane and carry on until the next overtake is required. If middle lane drivers could all drive between 65/70mph it shouldn't cause a problem. If anyone wants to overtake these vehicles they have to do so in the right hand lane and excede the speed limit which is when accidents happen. I will shortly be driving to the south east of England for a few days or so.If I get back safely I will post my latest thought of middle lane drivers.Cheers.S.O.G.
