My car, (a '96 Ford Escort 1.6 16v) has developed a fault on the automatic gearbox. When one selects drive "D" the car shudders for a few seconds and then drives off as normal. The gearbox has no other problems while the car is driven at driven speeds until you come to a stop. Just before you come to a standstill the gearbox shudders again for a few seconds and then stops. I've the checked the oil levels in the gearbox to be within the level limits.

Any ideas what the fault could be and a solution please?

The CVT gearboxes fitted to escorts can be a pain. They start shuddering and ususaly end up getting to a stage where they stall the car a lot (especially when cold) when selecting D. Ask a garage to make sure the car is setup correctly regarding the engine idle/electronic choke. If this is correct Ford used to make a modification kit for the gearbox to aid this problem.
there is also a possability that it may be an impellor/torque converter fault. get it checked.

I contacted different garages today and explained the fault to them. They all had a common reply, ("it sounds like the gearbox is as good as broken"). As I've been quoated 1000+ to have the gearbox overhauled/repaired, its not feasible as its more than the value of the car. Also the gearbox is quiet noisy now even in the park "P" position and the car is totally undrivable.
when you say you checked the fluid level ,did you, check it with the engine running with the gearbox fully warmed up, in park?
Your torque converter is f****d!!!!
The problem sounds like the forward clutch apply valve is failing.

It will cost between 200-300 to sort out.

You will soon be having a oilpumpcrash. It's the intergrated oilpump in the gearbox that's is soon history. It's cheaper to change the hole gearbox instead of the oilpump. A new one in Germany cost around 700 euro.
