It's my daughters birthday tomorrow and i'm sure i read it was happening thursday, i've told her i've arranged a surprise for her so i need to know the time it's happening lol

AURORA WATCH: A coronal mass ejection (CME) propelled toward Earth by a solar eruption on August 7th has yet to arrive. With each passing hour of no-impact, the odds of geomagnetic activity lessen. This CME is probably too slow-moving to deal a strong blow to Earth's magnetic field. Even so, high-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras through August 11th.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is entering the debris stream of comet Swift-Tuttle and this is causing the annual Perseid meteor shower. According to the International Meteor Organization, observers are now counting as many as 25 meteors per hour during the dark hours before dawn. For Tamas Ladanyi of Taliandorogd, Hungary, just one was plenty:

The best is yet to come. Earth is approaching the heart of the debris stream, causing meteor rates to increase rapidly. On peak-night, Thursday, August 12th, observers could count as many as 100 Perseids per hour. It's such a good show, even the planets are gathering to watch. Shouldn't you, too?

In the evening of thursday the best part of the sky to watch is slightly north of east, becoming more overhead towards dawn.

Our local astronomer says the best time to see the shower is between 11pm and 5am on Wednesday and Thursday nights. If you live in the countryside where there is less light pollution you should be able to see up to 70-80 meteors per hour. Hopefully it will be a clear night. He also said you may be able to pick out communications satellites which are moving very slowly. Amazingly this shower is said to be up to 160,000 years old, but most of what we see will be around 5,000years old, (how do they work that out)?
