In my experience, if the school uniform is removed - the kids will sort out a uniform of their own.
School is such a once-in-a-lifetime unique situation where individuals from all lifestyles, personalities and intellectual levels are forced to exist together that some sort of 'conformity' naturally evolves.
I used to be able to see both sides of the coin: 1) Uniforms are good because they 'level' everyone no matter what background they come from 2) Uniforms are bad because they destroy young persons' desires to explore their own personal freedom of expression.
I am more weighted to the latter - Primark and other cheap clothing outlets allow the poorer kids to look 'fashionable' if needs be and charity shops//home altering cater for the more creative kids.
I think they are a a terribly good thing. However I didn't like the blazers we used to have to wear because I sweat a lot more than other people and it used to smell after a short time of wearing it. I only had 1 blazer so you can see the problem because we had to wear it all the time. I used to plaster myself in after shave when I reached my teens which covered it up quite a bit.

However when I was in Scotland I saw the girls School uniform and was shocked to say the least. It was knee high or above socks with a short skirt. I thought this was wrong for girls which I thought was about 10 walking around in this.
